On 9 May, Alistair Stewart left a message on my phone to advise that he had
seen a strange White Ibis. The major difference was that it was much larger
than the normal looking Australian White Ibis that it was with. Today I
received some photos which reveal little except that it is juvenile bird.
Anyone in the Ballina area might like to keep a lookout for it .Unfortunately
none show an open wing. I don't know whether Black-headed Ibis is larger or not
than our Australian bird but otherwise there could be a very slim chance that
it could be that species. His message is below.
Hi Mike,
Here are some bad phone photos of the ibis. There are 8 of the pale headed bird
and one normal Aus White Ibis.
Driving passed I noticed the bird was larger and obviously whiter on the head.
Side by side with adult White Ibis it appeared 8-10% larger with legs slightly
sturdier and bill obviously longer. I'm not sure how plastic the bill length is
but that seemed odd that it was larger than all other (about 10 individuals)
White Ibis on the lawn.
Location was approximately:
