25/07 For those who haven't checked yet, your project marking runs
are available for collection. See "collecting your marked
assignments" below.
23/07 Robotics lecturer Alan Blair:
http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~blair
is looking for student volunteers to referee matches at
the upcoming Robocup Junior NSW Soccer Competition to be
held at the Powerhouse Museum on August 21-22, 2003.
Please email him if you are interested.
10/07 Your provisional marks can now be inspected (except we haven't
taken plagiarism into account yet). Follow the "provisional
subject results" link below. More info will follow next week,
so hold back on the questions until then. Well done everyone!
04/07 Photos from the Thomas Testbed day are available below.
25/06 Just a reminder - keep checking the subject homepage
to see your project marks and marking runs
and to check if you have been identified as needing
a plagiarism interview in the break. Also for
info about school visits.
Also - the student with my copy of GEB (adrian?)
could you drop it off to sam sometime over the
break (don't just hand it in at the school office
for me as things sometimes disappear when that happens)
And the student helping me with the aboriginal students
- check your email from time to time and i'll mail
you about it this week.
Good luck for exam - i've answered all questions in
the exam section of the faq so read thru if you are
interested. Any last minute questions posted early
tomorrow morning before i have to leave i'll answer
also.
23/06 Note also admin consults (not teaching consults though) are
still running, if needed.
23/06 Note i changed the times i'll be in tomorrow to fit in
with the maths exam - see below.
23/06 I'll be in at uni from 1-4pm tomorrow.
If you have any more questions come up to Level2 k17 and ask.
I have a meeting at 2pm and i might have to go to another
also during this time, if so I'll post a note on the meeting
room window saying what time i'll be back. Or you can ask
questions online in the Exam section of the FAQ. I'll try to
book a big room for as much of the time as possible.
Let me add my best wishes to those from Sam below. -- R
16/06 Exam is on Wed 25th June 1:45pm - 5:00pm, for those who are
too lazy (foolish) to read the exam timetable. There are two
groups of students split alphabetically according to your
family name - both exam rooms are at Randwick Racecourse.
Good Luck!!!
31/05 Some official clarications posted in the official
clarifications section of the FAQ - to address some common
questions from friday's consult.
31/05 TO summaries the latest extensions:
Location still due SAT but NO late penalty if handed in on
SUN. 20% penalty for MON. 100% after mon
Strategy due FRI week13. 10% penalty for SAT. 100% for SUN.
Network same as Strategy. Location students need to submit
a diary with Location and (possibly) a dummy version of Network
which we won't mark. ALL students will need to submit a
Network module next week - details in lectures once we work
them out. (poor Sam has been caught out by the asymmetric
extension - sorry Sam!)
25/05 Extra teaching consultations are running this week (Week 12).
23/05 Submissions for the project are now OPEN.
22/05 Anticlockwise and clockwise were reversed in the lab
notes. Now derevered.
21/05 FAQ now happy. I've seen the suggestions for the optional
lecture and puzzles/self-reference/contractions etc
seems to be the most popular. The current plan is
to have graphics next week. There is a slight chance
tim will want to give the graphics lecture this week
instead in which case we'll swap them.
21/05 There seem to be some problems with the faq. If I can't get
onto it soon i'll have to invent my own topic for tomorrow.
Probably category theory and/or compression.
20/05 I've put up some additional notes with a worked example
for tutorials this week. I wrote them for the tutors but
I've released them for all to see as they may assist
you with your project. See exercises homepage.
19/05 Extra teaching consultations are running this week (Week 11).
17/05 The project extension is - all modules (*including* Location)
now due Saturday at the end of week 12.
12/05 Final Exam - provisional timetable released. Also, Thomas/Lego
test bed groups have been selected.
11/05 Extra teaching consultations are running this week (Week 10).
07/05 Extra teaching consultations are running this week (Week 9).
30/04 Web site updates:
Application to construct thomas/lego testbed updated. All
applications by the end of this week please. A past exam
is now available for your reference (note the majong questions
were based on an assignment from that session). Richard's
Wednesday consult in week 9 is cancelled - consult on Thursday
instead.
30/04 Task2 test data is now available (see task2 description page).
30/04 Task2 submission process now includes some basic testing.
If you would like to check your assignment works on a basic
case, please (re)submit your assignment. Note: only your latest
submission will be marked.
30/04 Tomorrow (Thursday week 8) consultants will be available from
10-12 in the usual place.
28/04 Preliminary Project Spec 0.2 now released. Read
and understand *before* your tutorial this week.
28/04 Extra teaching consultations are being run this week to
help you with task2.
21/04 I've updated the FAQ and released the Final
spec. The due date has been adjusted to
saturday not friday. Download the latest
version of all assignment files.
18/04 As announced in Thursday lecture: task2 due date
is extended to friday of week 8. Late penalties
have been altered too as all submissions need to
be in by the following monday (when solutions will
be shared).
16/04 Interface specification for Bin3 FSA now readable
(reload tut07 exercises or access directly in week06
lecture examples)
16/04 I'm still a bit sick so treat me nicely in the lecture.
There will be no extension lecture this week (we'll prob
do crypto in the first week back) and my consultation
this week is cancelled.
15/04 An overview of the task 2 spec now available.
14/04 A reminder that the Tute allocations and Merit List pages
get updated regularly, so keep checking them to make sure
your details are correcy. Any problems contact your tutor
or email the subject admin account.
12/04 I've ammended the week 7 lab exercises, so refresh them
if you got a copy yesterday or this morning. (I made
them a bit easier by replacing a question. If you've
already started on that question that's still useful
as it will be in a future lab.)
08/04 Preparation for extension lecture: watch "Bladerunner"
07/04 Extension lecture this week (on Alan Turing) will run
*between* the thursday lectures this week (W6). The
next extension lecture is currently planned to run
*before* the thursday lectures in Week 7. Note it is
completely *optional* and is non-examinable. Just
come if you are interested.
07/04 The lab 06 exercises I put up last week had some typos
in them now corrected (thanks to all who alerted me)
Namely:
1. type signature and examples for modExp typo
2. spec did say 0.5 marks for each core qn. That is
incorrect - you need to do both to get one mark.
No half marks.
(BTW - you should aim to complete the core exercises
each week. You'll need to start them at home in
advance. Do the advanced exercises if you have time
or if you think you need extra practise on these
topics. Don't do the brownie point exercises, they
are always too hard!)
3. Ext21.hs file for brownie exercise not given. This
file contains stuff we haven't covered yet so i
omitted it but forgot to omit the reference to it.
now corrected.
31/03 Contact details for the two elected class reps (Yao and
Natalie) are given below. I'll try to meet them each
week to find out if there are any issues i need to address.
The 1711 Haiku compositions have been published in the
lecture-files directory - check them out they are great!
28/03 Some extra testing code has been put in the sample data/
tests directory to help you test your submissions (see
Task 1 page for link)
27/03 Sam will be running an extra Admin Consult tomorrow (Friday)
at 2pm, Level 2, K17 building.
27/03 The bug in the task1 submission procedure has now been fixed -
so keep submitting! email cs1711ass@cse.unsw.edu.au if you
have any further problems submitting but hopefully all is now
ok. (a number of students have successfully submitted already)
26/03 Submissions for task1 are NOW OPEN! Follow the directions in
the task1 description page to submit your assignment.
26/03 FAQ all working fine again. No more email questions
please - just use the FAQ.
25/03 Task 1 FAQ (frequently asked questions) page now active.
(see link on task 1 homepage). Please use the FAQ to ask
questions rather than email from now onwards.
24/03 Corrected a minor error in the Task1 'SampleText.hs' usage
instructions. The functionality of the file hasn't changed but
the comments in it have (slightly).
24/03 Extra Teaching Consultations are running this week (Week 4),
to help you with task1 - see the Teaching Consultations page
for details of when.
18/03 There is an ethics lecture on today for anyone interested
(not part of 1711 - it's run for the 3rd year software
engineers but I've got the OK for any interested 1711
students to attend). The guest speaker is a philosopher/
ethicist and he is, apparently, fantastic. It's in the
physics theatre 12-2 today (ie Tuesday - sorry about the
short notice!) Please mention this to other 1711 students
you see today as there is one student who was keen to go
and i don't know his contact details to tell him it's on.
16/03 Richard's consult moved to thursday this week (see link below)
Don't forget there are teaching consultations everyday for
ANYONE who needs ANY help with the subject material (link below)
15/03 Draft spec of assignment released for those interested. You
won't really be able to start until after the wed lecture
- the best preparation you can do is practise and do the
tut/lab exercises. Spec will be expanded over the week.
10/03 The CSE copy of ConTEXT has now been fixed and is available for
download. Also, the HelpDesk are now selling Unix Primers and
HomeComputing CDs.
09/03 See Tutorial/Lab exercises page for the Scavenger Hunt
questions (due end week 2)
07/03 I've just noticed the homecomputing site doesn't have any
installation instructions. So i've added some at the bottom
of this page plus a link to a smaller version of ghc for
those on slow modems. Aim to get it installed and start
practising before classes next week.
07/03 Week 2 tutorial exercises and lab exercises now available.
06/03 Lecture notes and examples now up. Tutorial and lab exercises
plus improved download links to follow.
05/03 Tutorial times and locations have been updated - follow the
link below and check your allocation is correct.
05/03 Lectures tommorrow are 1-2 and 3-4 in EELG1. No optional
lecture this week but I'll wait around and chat and answer
any queries anyone has.
Homework tonight is to download GHC and ConTEXT from the
homecomputing site (see links below). If you are feeling
brave try and install them tonight, otherwise wait to see
how I do it tommorrow.
04/03 Lecture times are looking closer to being finalised (phew!)
but we still have a possible clash thur2-3 for a number of
students. Come along to the wed 1pm lecture tommorrow and
we'll we what we can do.
04/03 Tutorials and labs start in week 2. There is a scavenger
hunt for the week 1 lab mark. Details in the Wednesday lecture.
We will probably cancel the Thur15 tutorial and move those
students to the thur16 slot. Contact cs1711@cse.unsw.edu.au
if this is a problem for you or speak with sam at the first
lecture.
03/03 Today is 03/03/03
12/02 Welcome to comp1711!
(click on the [...] button to the right to see all messages)
12/02 Check this page regularly as all subject information will be
posted here. This site will be updated frequently (including
before session commences). Make sure you check back here
before week 1 for more information about what you need to do
in week 1, details about tutorial & labs in week 1, and answers
to frequently asked questions.
12/02 To transfer INTO 1711: print out the consent form (link below),
sign it, and take it into the school office (ground floor of the
K17 building)
12/02 There will be a scavenger hunt as part of your week 1 lab mark.
12/02 We have cancelled the Fri13 tutorial-labs, and the Tue11
tutorial-lab. If you are one of the 3 students who has booked
one of these times please change to another tutorial.
12/02 The 1711 lecture times shown on the timetable are not correct.
More details as soon as the correct times are confirmed (we are
waiting on confirmation of lecture room bookings). Either the friday
lecture will be moved to thursday 14, or the thursday lecture will be
moved to friday 13. (in some weeks we will run an optional extension
lecture in the hour after our last lecture of the week, this is just
for fun, but if you can you should try to arrange your timetable to
leave that time free).
