MapReduce (cont)

MapReduce as a "database language"
  • some advocates of MapReduce have oversold it (replace SQL)
  • DeWitt/Stonebraker criticised this
    • return to low-level model of data access
    • all done before in distributed DB research
    • misses efficiency opportunities affored by DBMSs
  • concensus is emerging
    • SQL/MapReduce good for different kinds of task
    • MapReduce as a basis for SQL-like languages (e.g. Apache HiveQL)
