Australian Hotels: A Brief Guide
Introduction
Australian hotels (almost always called "pubs")
are based on the English-style pub.
However, the history of the country as a convict and then
pioneer colony has meant that rather than having a lounge-room
ambience, they often have more of a hose-down, swill-from-the-trough
feel.
This was certainly true for most of this century, although recent
times have seen a renaissance (most would say "yuppification")
of the pub towards the English style, but often coupled with
exceptionally good food.
