Faculty of Engineering Elite Student Policy (circa 2012)

The intention of this policy is that certain students be identified as elite students who may, in consultation with the appropriate program authority, vary their course of study to a limited extent to allow them to pursue individual interests. The program modifications for each student are implemented via use of the substitution rule.

Participation of eligible students in the elite student program is optional.

Definition

An elite student is defined to be a student who is admitted to an Engineering program with a UAI (or its equivalent) of greater than 98 or who has a WAM of not less than 85 in the previous two consecutive sessions.

Maintenance of Performance

At the start of each calendar year, students whose performance satisfies the above will be invited to join the program. Courses approved as part of the elite student program will be weighted in the Honours determination according to the Honours Policy. Performance will be assessed annually.

Program Design

An elite student enrolled in a program may, in consultation with the program authority and according to the guidelines for that program, modify the course of study. A modified course of study may emphasise design, project work, technical depth, technical breadth, general breadth or research as appropriate.

Program Guidelines

Each program authority should clearly set out guidelines for the modification of programs for elite students. Program guidelines should indicate a range of variations to a program that would be acceptable to the program authority. The guidelines should try to allow for modifications in all stages of the program.

Quality Assurance

Regardless of the course of study undertaken by an elite student, the program authority must guarantee each student's competence in all core material in the standard program.

Review

The policy will be reviewed annually.
