I drove an all the way into Palm Valley in a hired automatic Nissan
X-Trail ("soft roader"). There were three Forresters in the carpark (all
the way in) that day. No need whatsoever for a bigger 4WD. Not even close.
The X-Trail is similar to the Forrester for off-road ability and handled
everything I threw at it between Alice Springs and Adelaide easily,
including sandy corrugations, creeks, gibber plain and the like.
I tend to fly to remote locations and then hire a car.
Unless you plan to spend almost all your time off the beaten track you
should seriously consider only hiring a big 4WD for the times you need
it. It'll mean you have a better car for the rest of the year that's
cheaper to run.

You only need high clearance for the last couple of km on the way into
Palm Valley, which is easily walked, and increases your opportunities
for seeing birds [like dusky grasswrens].
