Laurie mentioned the ultimate requirement for an off-roader, ie
high ground clearance. T-model Fords went places even Land-cruisers couldn't
go, they had wheels like carts and highly strung springs, (replacable with a
length of roadside timber.)
They were also lightweights compared to today's monsters,
pushoutable (after unpacking) like the Aboriginal's Falcon that Anthea
mentioned. Their light weight was why the beach and dune tours on Fraser
Island used the old Landrovers, (apart from their rust resistance, being
Aluminium), they didn't sink into the sand as easily as Toyotas.
Subarus are, apparantly, perfectly balanced. Not being a teacher
or having a baby on board, I've never driven one, but while waiting for a
tyre fitting in Alice Srings one time, the dealer told me that a Subaru came
in having driven on unsealed roads with a flat tyre for 25km and had barely
noticed the difference.
                                                   Cheers
                                                        Michael
