Logging in to CSE

This is a pair exercise and must be competed in your tutorial or lab with your partner.

Once you are in your lab, one student from your pair should log into the lab computer.

To log in, you use your zID (which looks something like z1234567) and your zPass (which is used to log into all other university online services).

The CSE labs use the Linux operating system (not Windows or OSX or …).

When you log in, by default, you’ll be using the xfce4 window manager, and you’ll see a Linux desktop. Along with menus that you can see, such as the Applications Menu in the top left corner, it also has a simple menu you can access by right-clicking anywhere on the desktop.

Have a look around and see if you can work out how to open a web browser.

One student from each pair should log in and type up the program. You should alternate who is responsible for writing and submitting the code using give so you both get a chance to do some actual coding as well as more general problem solving.

From week 2 on-wards, you will both need to submit all code that you write with your partner. Whilst only one of you will be coding at a time and you will still alternate roles, at the end of each tutorial you will need to share code so that you can both submit it using give. This will be discussed further next week.
