2002 was a good year for Sydney's Cog. A band whose profile has been raised significantly: with favourable reviews of their two part 'Just Visiting' EP series, and a well-reputed live act, it seems that this tight three piece has pushed all the right buttons. Their new third EP will be doing likewise, giving an eye opener to what this band are capable of, and also harnessing enough material to satisfy their small, but growing number of fans.

The single track "Open Up" is a cover of a Public Image Ltd/Leftfield song which many will recognise from many a bleary-eyed early morning guest programming slot on Rage. Cog do the track justice: supplementing the electronic impasses of the original with a vigourous, organic, and concise wall of solid guitar work. It's catchy, and with repeated listens you can't help but admire the chunky guitar-driven thrust of the chorus. Lovely.

A slightly more subdued follow up to the title track occurs in "Open Up A Little More", but the real action comes through the full length versions of "Moshiach" and "Paris, Texas", both tracks featuring in Part I and II of Just Visiting respectively. A sign of Cog's work: the band known for their elongated versions of songs during their live sets. The full length versions of the songs do the tracks justice, and provide an exciting framework for whatever is coming next. When's the album guys?
