Agenda

  1. Apologies and Welcome

Apologies: Sri Parameswaran, Fethi Rabhi, Richard Buckland.

  2. Minutes of Previous Meeting *

  3. Reports from Bodies outside CSE

John Shepherd will report on any interesting/relevant devlopments that have occurred in committees, working-groups, etc. at UNSW.

  4. Developments inside CSE

A number of new roles have been created:

    • Raymond Wong: UNSW Online Coordinator

    • Aleks Ingjatovic: Elite Students Coordinator

    Reminder of Upcoming Events:

    • Teaching Practices Workshop, Web 12 Feb 10-12, K17 113,   RSVP needed

    • Convenor/Admin Induction, Web 12 Feb 1-3, K17 113,   RSVP needed

    • Various welcomes in O-week (UG, PG Coursework)

  5. Enrolments 2020

Difficult to give a definitive answer at this stage but

    • UG starters seem to be slightly higher than last year (COMP1511)
    • PG starters seem to be significantly lower than last year (COMP9021)

Compounding factors: PGs tend to arrive in O-week or Week1; The Virus.

  6. Strand Restructuring: Software Project/Product Management

A number of existing courses deal with aspects of project management. There appears to be some overlap and some gaps. Can we coordinate the content of the following courses better:

    • COMP1531 Software Engineering Fundamentals
    • ? DESN2000 Engineering Design and Professional Practice
    • COMP3900 Computer Science Project
    • COMP9900 Information Technology Project
    • COMP3601 Design Project A
    • COMP4601 Design Project B
    • BINF6111 Genome Informatics Engineering Design Workshop
    • BINF6112 Computational Biology Engineering Design Workshop
    • SENG2021 Requirements and Design Workshop
    • SENG3011 Software Engineering Workshop 3
    • COMP4920 Project Management and Ethics
    • SENG4920 Ethics and Project Management

Do we need an additional course for CS and MIT students as a lead-in to COMP3900/9900?

    • COMP2531 Software Product Management
    • COMP9531 Software Product Management

  7. New Program: Online Masters in Cyber Security

Richard Buckland and Ben Turnbull (UNSW Canberra) are developing a suite of online programs to cater for the burgeoning demand for Cyber Security professionals.

At the previous Education Committee meeting, the proposal was deferred until more details could be worked out (and added into AIMS for EdC consideration)

    Proposals in AIMS:

  8. New Course: COMP6080 Web Front-end Programming

At the previous EdC meeting, there was general agreement to proceed with developing the proposal more. We can re-examine the proposal to make sure that it's ready for the Faculty Education Committee, and also get some updates on progress with developing the course.

    Proposals in AIMS:

  9. Course Outlines

CSE has a reputation for (a) course outlines not being publicly available, and (b) having a lot of variety in what/how information is presented. The goal is to be more systematic in our Course Outlines. All Course Outlines should now be made available before this meeting so that they can be audited for completeness/accuracy/quality. We will discuss how successful this has been.

  10. Prizes

With the CSE Devlopment Office disbanded, the management of Prizes has fallen to Emma Pambos and Andrew Taylor, on top of all of their other duties. We need to ensure that

    • industry sponsors continue to support CSE
    • we grow the pool of sponsors and prizes
    • the process of awarding prizes is well-defined

Does the School need a Prizes Coordinator? Should this be an academic staff member?

  11. Concept Mapping of CSE Courses

We plan to document the topics covered in all CSE courses, with the intention of finding duplication and gaps to give guidance for revising courses and proposing new courses.

    The goal is to check:

    • assumed knowledge (inputs)
    • learning outcomes (outputs)
    • concepts being taught (mapping inputs to outputs)

JAS will report on what data has been collected so far, what data is still needed, and what the current data shows.

  12. Any Other Business
