Pseudo is presented as a kind of demo [a pseud-emo perhaps] - to appease Cog's ardent fan base - but it's a such a well put together affair that it deserves a better notice. Slick graphics and tight, punchy playing make it worth getting along to a gig and seeking this out, particularly if you like your music hard and melodic. And look, I don't go to every hard rockin' show in town but that's maybe because I don't hear it played this invigoratingly or with this kind of freshness often enough. Cog don't just land in a solid groove, each song is a work of many textures, a combination of steel and melody. This perhaps best illustrated by the vocals of Flynn Gower, at their best, as on the opener Bondi, they sweep easily from sweet melody to a fierce howl. Great song. A lazy reference point is Tool but for mine the cog approach is better. It's more melodic and lacks the pure punish and woe, that dominates too many 'hard music' bands. Pseudo is alternately moody [Bondi and The Truth And Other Lies] and experimental [the various flirtations with samples prove that they aren't going to rest on the merits of their superb playing] and even though I'd reckon their absolute gem may be two albums away this is a more than worthy introduction. They're a band of incredibly well drilled musicians capable of changing tack and achieving almost anything. Just watch.
